Reviews of Love Springs a Leak
Pam is an outgoing cheerleader with a pixie haircut her mother insists on, black wing-tipped glasses and a talent for tripping, falling, dropping things and spilling things that gets her into as much trouble as does her habit of talking too much. So what is she doing falling in love with an astoundingly polite and proper young man who is every girl’s dream? Despite a rocky beginning that includes an obnoxious brother who accompanies them on their first date, spilled drinks and a mess of hot fudge, Charlie seems to find Pam entertaining, not embarrassing, and the romance rapidly progresses. When he accompanies her family to their new home, things really heat up, despite the icy cold of Alaska. Pam’s ability to laugh at herself, her awe at Charlie’s growing fondness for her, and her frustrations over the world’s worst brother make this book a delightful first-person excursion through an unexpected romance. This is one of the most enchanting novels I have ever read, with captivating characters, gentle humor and a realistic voice in the story’s narrator. Kenya Transtrum’s novel avoids all the usual pitfalls of ordinary romance novels. It is neither sappy nor unrealistic. It does not substitute sex for plot, and in fact, this book can be safely given to preteens and teenagers. Despite its appropriateness for teenagers, the novel will be enjoyed by their mothers as well, becoming a book they can read and treasure together. Teenagers will delight in a heroine they can identify with in all her faults and virtues, and adults will be transported back to their own special romances, with their many joys, insecurities and surprises. Love Springs a Leak is a must-read for all those anticipating or remembering first love. Terrie Bittner
Kenya Transtrum writes about her characters just the way I like them... with a sense of humor! This light-hearted romance leaves you feeling that "happily ever after" isn't really that far away for any of us!" I liked her protagonist's sense of humor, and she has a way of describing that's fun to read!
