Dave attends Publishing Program at New York University.
The first week in April, Dave went to New York to attend
the First Management Forum for Independent Publishers at New York
University. The three-day forum was packed with presentations by publishing
professionals—over twenty of them—on every aspect of the business—from
current market trends to the new ONIX data management system, and everything
in between.
As helpful as anything were the contacts that were made.
Robert Baensch, the director of the publishing program at New York
University, was especially helpful. He granted Dave nearly an hour of
one-on-one time to answer all of his questions as a start-up-publisher, and
furnished him with names of helpful contacts.
After explaining his mission to some of the guests, he was
greeted with great interest by marketing representatives of Barnes and Noble
and Amazon, as well as other contacts. Other more experienced publishers
were also helpful in sharing tips and making themselves available since the
forum by telephone for questions. |

Dave and Kenya to be attending BookExpo America.
In our continuing quest for national markets,
Dave Hall, our president, and Kenya Transtrum, our fiction acquisitions
editor, will both be attending BookExpo America in Los Angeles May 27-31.
This is the largest book event in the nation, and publishers, distributors,
rights agents, bookstores, and others associated with the publishing
industry will be there.
Our agenda will be two-fold: We'll be taking
courses on the publishing business—on subjects ranging from e-book
publishing to creating publicity for authors to learning what the public is
reading today. Second, we plan on making contacts. We already have tentative
appointments with a representative from Books-A-Million, the nation's third
largest bookstore chain, and with book cover designers and distributors.
We're hoping to show, by continuing to
circulate among national book publishing professionals, how serious we are
about cultivating national markets. It takes a lot of work and commitment to
do that, and we intend to establish those relationships and firmly establish
our business on a national scale. |

Mapletree's First Titles Moving Closer to Market
We're preparing our first title, Threads
of Honor, for the printer. In addition, we have two other titles we plan
to have ready for the LDS Booksellers Association Convention: Love
Springs a Leak, by Kenya Transtrum; and A Question of Consequence,
also by Gordon Ryan.
We've been signing more authors. We recently
signed our first debut novelist. It's actually a co-author mother-daughter
team from Alabama—Sandra Poole and Jennifer Youngblood. They plan on making
a career of writing, and we're looking for great things from them. Their
first work, Livin' in High Cotton, is billed as "a story of love,
betrayal, and the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity."
We currently have contracts for seven titles,
and are in negotiations for an eighth. You can see all of them listed and
described, with information about the authors, on our web site at
www.mapletreepublishing.com/books.htm. |
