Mapletree Relocates to Denver Area
We've been planning this move for some time, but have been
reluctant to say anything until we knew it would happen. So many things had
to fall in place in order for it to occur. But, miraculously, all the pieces
did fall into place, and here we are now in the
metropolitan Denver area as of the middle of November.
The new address for Mapletree Publishing Company is 6233
Harvard Lane, Highlands Ranch, Colorado 80130-3773. Our 800 number is the
same: 800-LDS-0414. Our new phone number is 303-791-9024 and our
fax number is 303-791-9028. Highlands Ranch is a fast-growing suburb about
seven miles south of Denver.
Our marketing and production director, Sue Collier, is
also in Highlands Ranch and will now be able to work with us face-to-face
and not just over the Internet and telephone lines. Our publicist, Kathy Titze, has also recently moved from Iowa to Denver.

Why Denver?
There are several facts that make Denver the
overwhelmingly logical choice for an LDS publishing company seeking national
markets. Many people are not aware that Denver is a great national
publishing center. In fact, membership rolls of the Publishers Marketing
Association show more publishing companies in Colorado per million people
than any other state, as far as we can tell. With 130 publishing companies
for a population of 4,301,000, that makes just over 30 publishing companies
per million people. By contrast, Iowa has 5 publishing companies per million
people. New York, of course, with its publishing giants, is the publishing
center of the country. However, even New York has under 12
1/2 publishing companies per million
people. Therefore, Denver has great publishing resources: legal expertise,
marketing expertise, and many people with publishing experience as potential
resources for a company intending to grow. And since the success of a publishing business
is contacts, contacts, and more contacts, we feel this was a great
move. |
 |
Also, the University of Denver is one of only
four institutions of higher learning in the country that offer a program in
publishing. We met Elizabeth Geiser, the director of the University of
Denver's publishing program when we visited Denver in August, and met a
number of their recent graduates, and confirmed that their program would be
a great source of new publishing talent.
Additionally, Denver is a Latter-day Saint center. With over
120,000 latter-day saints in nearly 30 stakes in Colorado, there is a great pool
of talent. In our particular suburb which is near the Denver temple, LDS
membership approaches 10% of the population.
While this move has consumed a lot of time and energy (because of
the many complications in re-staffing, legal, financial, and logistical
difficulties that needed to be overcome), we are confident that it will position
us for future success for us and our authors. We feel it underscores our
commitment to the mission of bringing LDS authors to national markets.

Kathy Titze Joins Mapletree Staff as Publicist
In late summer, we added Kathy Titze to our
staff. Kathy worked with Mapletree owner Dave Hall when he was LDS Director
of Public Affairs in eastern Iowa in the early 90's. At that time, she was
media director for the Iowa City area, and made a great impression on Dave
with her creativity and drive. After he started Mapletree Publishing
Company, he tracked her down in late winter 2003, and found that she had
moved to Denver. When we decided to move the company to the Denver area, she
was a logical choice for a publicist.
Kathy had a chance in September to "try her wings" in her new position by
arranging for publicity for Threads of Honor in a special
pre-national-release bookselling event. We had a couple of cases of the book
printed for some appearances by William Tolbert, the hero of the book, and
were delighted when Kathy was able to arrange two radio talk shows, some
newspaper space, and a book signing that sold out our entire stock in one
day. She feels so passionately about our mission that she was almost
ready to volunteer her services. We feel she'll be a great addition to our
team.
With our focus on marketing, an in-house publicist with the energy and commitment that Kathy
has will be a tremendous asset. |

Mortality Ads Begin Running on
KSL Radio
In preparation for the Christmas season, we have bought
two weeks worth of radio ads promoting our LDS games, Mortality, on
KSL radio for the end of November and early December. We have targeted the
early afternoon
Sean Hannity show, because of its large audience in our target demographic, with a series of ads produced by KSL that we think will
drum up quite a bit of enthusiasm. We've attached the ad they produced for
us to this e-mail newsletter, in case you'd like to hear it. Windows Media
Player or some other MP3 player is required to listen. |
