THE STORY OF THE AMAZING AMERICAN FLAG THAT SURVIVED THE CHALLENGER
EXPLOSION
DENVER, COLORADO—The Challenger
shuttle disaster still holds the all-time news interest record for the
United States (source: The Pew Research Center). Scoutmaster Bill Tolbert
and his Boy Scout Troop had a special interest on that day of the
Challenger explosion: Their troop American flag was on board. They had
hoped to watch it fly into space only to see it, along with their shuttle
and its courageous crew, blown away and lost forever—or so they thought.
The amazing part of this story is that, nine months later, this flag was
recovered, intact and completely unscathed, from the Challenger wreckage
at the bottom of the ocean. The flag was returned to the troop, and the
troop and their flag were honored at the Constitution Bicentennial
celebration in Philadelphia the following year.
January 28, 2006 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Challenger
disaster. What more fitting way to remember the brave astronauts who
perished in service to their country than to recognize the amazing
American flag that accompanied their final mission. Call or e-mail now to
schedule an interview about this inspiring patriotic story.
This story has been made the subject
of a book, Threads of Honor, that has been published by Mapletree
Publishing Company of Denver, Colorado. Scoutmaster Bill Tolbert, who was
 |
responsible for getting the flag on
the Challenger, is a retired Air Force major and is now the head of a
company that develops infrastructure projects all over the world. He has
done many TV and radio interviews on a number of topics, and is
quick-witted and articulate. He lives in the Denver area, but is available
by telephone and satellite for interviews.
Boys’ Life said that this story “is
guaranteed to give you goose bumps.” Veteran radio talk show host Elliott
Irving said, “Bill Tolbert is one of my all-time favorite show guests, and
this book should be in every private and public library across America.”
