THE SOCIALIZATION QUESTION
DENVER, COLORADO—The number one issue that dogs homeschoolers is, without
question, socialization. Parents considering homeschooling worry about it.
They will find it to be a major criticism coming from friends and
relatives. They discuss it at homeschooling conventions.
Rachel Gathercole, in her landmark new book, confronts this issue directly
and forcefully. She contends that not only are homeschooled children
adequately socialized, but homeschooling affords a superior socialization
environment. Her assertions are supported with methodically researched
data, including interviews with dozens of homeschooled children and their
parents. She also discusses resources available for homeschool parents to
enhance the socialization experiences of their children.
Foreword Magazine, in the July/August 2007 issue, calls this book “the
definitive book regarding the socialization question.” Mike Smith,
President of the Home School Legal Defense Association, says that Rachel’s
book provides “the most complete answer to this question that I have seen.
She brings out points that I had never thought of (I thought I had heard
them all) and I will use in the future. This is a must read for home
schoolers.” Wendy Priesnitz, Editor of Life Learning magazine, calls it a
“valuable addition to the homeschooling literature.”
Rachel Gathercole is a freelance writer who has written for many
homeschooling and parenting publications. She holds a bachelor’s degree in
English from the University of North Carolina and is a former co-leader in
the Home Education Association of North Carolina. She has been
homeschooling her own three children for over ten years and is an
instructor for independent writing courses for homeschoolers.
